The Cowgirl Archetype
Written by Jan Wakefield, co-facilitator of the Cowgirl's Guide to Emotional Fitness workshop
With diverse approaches to how they guide women through the transformative process, Jan and Dulce intersect at the cowgirl archetype. Their collaborative work focuses on this archetype as a way of seeing the strength that lies beneath all the chaos and challenges of life.
For Dulce and Jan, the cowgirl archetype has an inward aspect that is equally as gritty as its outward appearance. It transcends place because it lives within. Words like strength, courage, wisdom, independence, perseverance, and bold come to mind. Living and thriving in a man's world, the cowgirl archetype blazes trails despite limitations and sees challenging situations as opportunities.
Dulce and Jan provide external and internal landscapes to bring forth the cowgirl archetype in every woman, so she can overcome limitations of the past and step forward into a stronger and wiser version of herself.
"In the barn, Jan and Dulce let the horses guide women through both dark and beautiful places within themselves. Their job, as human witnesses, is to hold sacred space for the challenges these women have endured."
At the end of the day, the work is always between us and ourselves, and horses meet us wherever we are without judgement. In the presence of this massive creature we automatically shift our focus from the minutia of our story and suffering to the present moment of what is going on right now.
By interrupting that pattern of internal dialogue and self-judgement, the brain instantly learns a new way of operating. Even if we are not yet able to stay in that place of presence in the moment, the imprint is now there and we can, with practice, always access it again.
In situations where we have given ourselves the freedom to let the cowgirl loose, we finally breathe life into our inner wild woman. Calling forth the wild woman — rather than leaving her to run amok in our lives (and then judging ourselves for being who we really are) — is what frees us to be powerful women who evoke change, build empires, and bring people toward greatness in the process. Powerful women include others.
"Women who embody the cowgirl archetype know that life in the barn can be messy and dirty and feel hard. But they also know that harnessing the power of the cowgirl within — a balance of effort and surrender — leads to a more effortless ride through life."
And when things come up in life, just as they do when riding a horse, she is ready to meet the challenge in the moment before getting back to just enjoying the moment.
